The session focused on strengthening Uganda\u2019s tourism sector through sustainability, innovation, and global market readiness \u2014 key drivers shaping the future of travel worldwide.<\/p><h5><strong>Understanding CBI and Its Role<\/strong><\/h5><p>CBI, established in 1971, plays a vital role in supporting the transition towards inclusive and sustainable economies. The organisation empowers small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to enhance their economic, social, and environmental sustainability and connects them with buyers and partners in the European market.<\/p><p>With over 10,000 SMEs from 70 countries supported and partnerships with more than 250 business support organisations, CBI brings over five decades of expertise to help businesses grow through exports while meeting evolving sustainability standards.<\/p><h5><strong>Transforming Uganda Tourism Project (2022\u20132025)<\/strong><\/h5><p>A major focus of the workshop was the Transforming Uganda Tourism (TUT) Project, a collaborative effort aimed at building a stronger and more responsible tourism sector in Uganda. European buyers and travellers are increasingly demanding evidence-based sustainability practices, and Ugandan businesses must adapt to remain competitive.<\/p><p><strong>Key recommendations included:<\/strong><\/p><p>Be honest and specific: Use \u201ceco-friendly\u201d only if it\u2019s backed by actions such as using local guides, reducing waste, or protecting wildlife.<\/p><p>Document your practices: Keep track of sustainability initiatives like energy use, waste management, and community support.<\/p><p>Communicate clearly: Use measurable example e.g., \u201cWe use solar energy in our lodges\u201d instead of vague terms like \u201cwe are green.\u201d<\/p><p>Train your staff: Ensure all team members understand and implement sustainable practices consistently.<\/p><h5><strong>Sustainability Priorities for ESTOA Members<\/strong><\/h5><p>The workshop also outlined a roadmap for ESTOA members to align their operations with global sustainability standards and market expectations:<\/p><p>1. Charter Alignment: Adopt and implement the ESTOA Sustainability Charter and principles.<\/p><p>2. Certification Proof: Work with credible ESG standards such as Travelife and pursue global sustainability certifications.<\/p><p>3. Market Intelligence: Research and understand EU buyer expectations and regulatory requirements.<\/p><p>4. Business Linkages (B2B): Strengthen collaborations with tourism boards, tour operators, and networks like ATTA, ETOA, VITO, and LATA.<\/p><p>5. Trade Fair Participation: Join major tourism trade fairs to expand market reach.<\/p><p>6. Product Design &amp; Storytelling: Highlight unique selling points, integrate sustainability messaging across platforms, and build a strong brand narrative.<\/p><p>7.
