The Exclusive Sustainable Tour Operators Association (ESTOA) hosted a pivotal workshop in partnership with the Centre for the Promotion of Imports (CBI), an initiative of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The session focused on strengthening Uganda’s tourism sector through sustainability, innovation, and global market readiness — key drivers shaping the future of travel worldwide.
Understanding CBI and Its Role
CBI, established in 1971, plays a vital role in supporting the transition towards inclusive and sustainable economies. The organisation empowers small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to enhance their economic, social, and environmental sustainability and connects them with buyers and partners in the European market.
With over 10,000 SMEs from 70 countries supported and partnerships with more than 250 business support organisations, CBI brings over five decades of expertise to help businesses grow through exports while meeting evolving sustainability standards.
Transforming Uganda Tourism Project (2022–2025)
A major focus of the workshop was the Transforming Uganda Tourism (TUT) Project, a collaborative effort aimed at building a stronger and more responsible tourism sector in Uganda. The project is designed to:
Improve the lives of local communities through sustainable tourism practices.
Deliver authentic, eco-conscious experiences that appeal to responsible travellers.
Support tour operators in attracting visitors who spend more, stay longer, travel year-round, and bring greater economic benefits to the country.
This initiative positions Uganda to compete effectively on the global stage while ensuring that tourism growth benefits both people and nature.
Practical Actions for Ugandan Tour Operators and Accommodations
The workshop emphasised that sustainability is more than a trend it is now a requirement in global tourism markets. European buyers and travellers are increasingly demanding evidence-based sustainability practices, and Ugandan businesses must adapt to remain competitive.
Key recommendations included:
Be honest and specific: Use “eco-friendly” only if it’s backed by actions such as using local guides, reducing waste, or protecting wildlife.
Document your practices: Keep track of sustainability initiatives like energy use, waste management, and community support.
Communicate clearly: Use measurable example e.g., “We use solar energy in our lodges” instead of vague terms like “we are green.”
Train your staff: Ensure all team members understand and implement sustainable practices consistently.
Sustainability Priorities for ESTOA Members
The workshop also outlined a roadmap for ESTOA members to align their operations with global sustainability standards and market expectations:
1. Charter Alignment: Adopt and implement the ESTOA Sustainability Charter and principles.
2. Certification Proof: Work with credible ESG standards such as Travelife and pursue global sustainability certifications.
3. Market Intelligence: Research and understand EU buyer expectations and regulatory requirements.
4. Business Linkages (B2B): Strengthen collaborations with tourism boards, tour operators, and networks like ATTA, ETOA, VITO, and LATA.
5. Trade Fair Participation: Join major tourism trade fairs to expand market reach.
6. Product Design & Storytelling: Highlight unique selling points, integrate sustainability messaging across platforms, and build a strong brand narrative.
7. Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on sustainability trends, attend training sessions, and renew certifications regularly.
🌍 Looking Ahead
The CBI–ESTOA workshop reaffirmed that sustainability is no longer optional — it is the future of tourism. By adopting verifiable eco-friendly practices, aligning with global standards, and strengthening partnerships, Ugandan tour operators can unlock new opportunities in the European market and beyond.
ESTOA remains committed to supporting its members in this journey, ensuring Uganda’s tourism sector thrives as a model of responsibility, inclusivity, and environmental stewardship. Together, we can shape a tourism industry that uplifts communities, protects nature, and proudly showcases Uganda as “The Pearl of Africa.”
