Introduction
Uganda’s tourism sector is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by a collective commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism practices. At the forefront of this movement are the Exclusive Sustainable Tour Operators Association (ESTOA) and the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI). Together, they are working to enhance the quality, diversity, and sustainability of Uganda’s tourism offerings.
ESTOA: Championing Sustainable Tourism
ESTOA is a unique association dedicated to fostering a sustainable tourism sector in Uganda. By representing tour operators committed to eco-friendly practices, ESTOA serves as a bridge between the private sector, government institutions, and other stakeholders. The association focuses on promoting conservation, encouraging responsible tourism, and ensuring that local communities benefit from tourism activities. Their initiatives include advocating for the conservation of national parks, promoting the planting of trees by tourists, and addressing environmental challenges such as the conservation of Lake Victoria.
CBI’s Transforming Uganda Tourism (TUT) Project
In 2021, CBI launched the Transforming Uganda Tourism (TUT) project, aiming to create a stronger and more responsible tourism sector in Uganda. The project’s goals include improving the lives of local communities and providing visitors with sustainable tourism experiences. TUT focuses on enhancing awareness and understanding of sustainable tourism, diversifying tourism products beyond traditional gorilla tours, improving service delivery, and upgrading tourism infrastructure.
Launch of the Ukarimu Project by CBI
On March 27, 2025, CBI introduced the Ukarimu Project, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing hospitality training within Uganda’s tourism sector. The Ukarimu Project seeks to provide comprehensive, open-source hospitality training programs designed to elevate service standards across the industry. By focusing on practical skills and industry-relevant knowledge, the project aims to equip individuals with the competencies necessary to excel in various hospitality roles, thereby contributing to the overall improvement of Uganda’s tourism offerings.
Collaborative Efforts Between ESTOA and CBI
The collaboration between ESTOA members and CBI is pivotal in achieving the shared vision of a sustainable tourism industry in Uganda. By participating in the TUT project, ESTOA members gain access to export coaching, training, and market insights that enable them to attract travelers interested in sustainability. This partnership empowers tour operators to implement eco-friendly practices, develop diverse tourism products, and reach international markets effectively.
Conclusion
The partnership between ESTOA and CBI exemplifies the power of collaboration in driving sustainable development within Uganda’s tourism sector. The launch of the Ukarimu Project further underscores CBI’s commitment to enhancing hospitality training and service standards. By working together, these organizations are not only enhancing the quality and diversity of tourism experiences but also ensuring that tourism contributes positively to environmental conservation and community well-being. CBI gives some of our members a free stand at this year’s POATE and also support all members with free membership status of travel life . As Uganda continues on this transformative journey, the combined efforts of ESTOA and CBI serve as a model for sustainable tourism development worldwide.
